Top 10 5 Characters and Literary Figures I'd Name My Children After

Been a few weeks since I've done one of these. This is a tough one.

5. Ligeia (character, Edgar Allan Poe's "Ligeia")

I love this name but it's probably too Gothic-y for real life. Has kind of a melodramatic feel (and its fictional origin doesn't exactly help).

4. Asenath Waite (character, H.P. Lovecraft's "The Thing on the Doorstep")

"Asenath" is pretty cool (it's from the Bible). But it's kind of weird, so it would have to be a middle name.

3. Dante Alighieri (author, The Divine Comedy)

Greatest. Poet. Ever. Another middle name, since it's become so closely associated with Inferno and been used in so many fantasy settings it's kind of a "Marty Stu" name.

2. Shreve Stockton (author and blogger, The Daily Coyote)

"Shreve"! I love it! Plus, she is SUCH an inspiring woman.

1. Hiro Protagonist (character, Snow Crash)

Just kidding!

That's all I can come up with, unfortunately. It occurs to me that most of the characters I come across have names that are either pretty ordinary or way too foreign.

I like the blog and I'm a new follower. The name Dante is definitely bold. I like it.

This is very fun. For now, however, I would hold this list back from any potential fathers of your children...

My friend Devon is super-enamored of To Kill a Mockingbird and basically wants to name all future children after characters in that book. She named her cat Harper just to get that out of her system. I agree with her about Atticus; I would totally name a son that.

Oh, and I almost named a sock pattern Ligeia! Then I thought that, while gothy, the sock was slightly more playful than that, and ended up naming it Wednesday after the Addams Family daughter.

I love the name Dante! Unfortunatley our last name is Dore (pronounced door-ay) so it would kind of rhyme and sound silly!

I understand your liking of Dante Alighieri -- Italian names roll so beautifully off the tongue. As for Poe references, I thought about adding "Annabelle Lee" to my list, but thought that to be a bit too fatalistic, considering the poem. If we're going off the idea that we pick names because we want to impart some of the same characteristics to our children, it's probably not wise to give them a name from Poe! :p

I had trouble coming up with names as well! All of the names I love are from characters I probably don't want to associate with my future kids (such as Dexter - love the character and the name, but naming my child after a serial killer is going too far).

Hey, I'm all over Ligeia, foreign sounding or not. It's awesome! And Dante would be a fabulous middle name.
Great list.
