The 78-Square Foot Studio

In Manhattan, naturally.

I love this! Americans have way too much crap in houses that are way too big and car-dependent. My own studio is a little over 300 square feet and is just right.

If I lived by myself I could see doing that. I spent the vast majority of my adult life basically living out of a trunk and some boxes of books. The largest place I've lived in was 2000 sq. ft., but there were four of us living there.

We're living in about 1,000 sq. ft. now. We pay for where we live and are good with that.

The whole stuff thing has always made me uncomfortable - something really depressing about all that acquisition.

If I lived by myself I'd be in the smallest studio I could afford in San Francisco - getting rid of most everything wouldn't bother me. Even the books. People have a fetish with having more space and more stuff than they really need.

He really should get a freakin' hot plate, though. =]

Amy and JoAnn: I know, right?

Caitlin: Agreed, agreed, agreed. Even if I got married and had a kid or two, I really don't ever see myself living in anything over 1,000 square feet. The size of the average American home, and not to mention all the crap we fill it up with, has gotten absolutely obscene and downright terrible for the environment. And those cookie-cutter suburbs that always look abandoned really are very depressing.

What a fascinating video! Wish I knew what the guy pays for rent, but I gotta say that as much as a part of me is attracted to the whole spartan idea of the thing, the shared bathroom thing would prob. be a deal-breaker for me. It also must be difficult to date someone when you're bringing love interests home to a room of that size; I can imagine people seeing the size of the place either laughing at the guy or being traumatized somehow by how small his apartment is. On the other hand, it is in NYC!

Richard: He's paying $800 a month. I'm paying a little over half that for a large bath, a kitchen, 10-foot ceilings, and a yard!

Wow, he seems to really make good use of every square inch! I could not share that tiny bathroom with 3 other people though.
