Sunday Salon

The Sunday Salon.com

Happy end-of-week everyone! The last few days have been pretty uneventful blog-wise. I didn't get back until Monday and then I remembered a post for Slaves of Golconda was due that same day. I also had a difficult time with my review for A Thousand Peaceful Cities. Have you ever had that experience where you've read a book, really liked it, but can't figure out what to say about it?

In other news: My mother received a $25 Barnes & Noble giftcard from the mother of one of her music students. And she gave it to me! I went last night and purchased the following:

On the left is City of Bones, the first book of "The Mortal Instruments" trilogy by Cassandra Clare. It's actually for my sister's upcoming 15th birthday but I'm thinking about reading it myself. With the recent Tender Morsels affair and the upcoming Horrible Dare Challenge,* I'm thinking I should try to read some YA fantasy I may actually like. City of Bones is about a teenage girl who becomes a demon-slayer so you know it has to be good.

On the right is John Dos Passos's The Manhattan Transfer, written sometime in the '20s. That's for me. I've been meaning to read more Dos Passos ever since I read The 42nd Parallel in college. But I've got other reading commitments I need to get to first.

And lastly: your weekly link round-up! This edition is going to be a little different. I just found all these blogs that focus on dollhouses and miniatures and they are so very cute! You can't even tell most of the time if you're looking at a real room or a mini-room.

I didn't know modern-style dollhouses existed. I thought they were all traditional.

* I just asked if I could substitute the Glenn Beck's The Christmas Sweater for the extracurricular Danielle Steele novel. My mother already owns it and I would like to avoid the embarrassment of checking Danielle Steele out of the library (because I am NOT spending any money on that crap).

Once again, I did not get to the Slaves title. Sigh. So much going on and despite many pouring praise upon the work, I just could not get very excited about the choice for the group this time. Did you enjoy it?

Congrats on the gift card, and love your mini links. Although I will probably never own a miniature world myself, I do love looking at them. There is a museum or two in these parts with some intricate, lovely examples.

Happy reading! Looks like you have tons going on!

Bad Blood started out quite good but I ended up abandoning it. I was reading TM at the same time and having difficulty with that one as well, so I decided to cut my losses. But according to the other reviewers BB actually picks up again after that lag in the middle. I'll probably give it another try some day.

I am looking forward to reading your thoughts on Manhattan Transfer - such an interesting looking book.

E.L. Fay, I own one of those two books you have pictured. Can you guess which one? :) Lucky you getting handed an unwanted gift card!

Wendy: Yep, I'll be writing about it once I'm done.

Richard: You've read City of Bones? Really? How is it? Is there a reason it has teen Fabio on the cover? (Although the rest of Clare's covers are pretty cool.)

That was really nice of your mom to give you the gift certificate! My daughter and I were at B&N Saturday, too...she picked up a few books to get the summer started.
